Theater for Civic Engagement
HartBeat’s Education Programs, inspired by Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed, use theater as a powerful tool for conflict resolution, civic engagement, and deeper learning. These programs encourage students to explore and address social issues through creative expression and collaboration.
By engaging in ensemble building and theatrical techniques, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enhancing their ability to navigate and contribute to their communities. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of social dynamics and empowers students to actively participate in shaping a more just and equitable society.
LifeLong Learning
Youth Play Institute (YPI)
YPI is a professional paid internship in community research, acting, playwriting, sound and light design or stage management for young adults between the ages of 16 and 21 years old. Youth work collaboratively to develop and express their perspectives about social justice topics and engage audiences through a political lens.
School Programming
HartBeat Ensemble offers customizable theater programs for grades 3-12, focusing on ensemble building and exploring important issues through physical theater. Their Social Studies Theater Workshop enhances students’ understanding of historical and current events. Programs are listed in the Hartford Performs database for Grades 4-8 in Hartford Public Schools.
